The Cape Evans Ponies

from Herbert Ponting’s book “The Great White South:

” Of the nineteen ponies with which we had left New Zealand, ten had survived the perils and hardships of the past year.  Nobby, the prettiest of them all, was the pony that had such a narrow escape from the jaws of the Killer whales in March.  He was Dr. Wilson’s special protégé, and invariably presented a better-groomed appearance than the others.  Christopher was the strongest and worst tempered.  Captain Oates always looked after this pony himself.  He would let no one else take the risk—for Christopher was vicious and dangerous.  It usually took three or four men to harness him, and he always had to be thrown, and his head held down, before he could be ‘hitched up’ to a sledge.”
