From geologist Frank Debenham’s diary, one hundred years ago today:
“The ponies are being trained to sledges now and on ‘Christopher’ is playing up badly. Soldier [“Titus” Oates] has him of course, and he takes a lot of managing. Soldier, Bill, Cherry and Crean went off with oates for the ponies to Hut Pt. This afternoon the telephone wire which was laid to Hut Pt. only a week ago, worked and we heard that they arrived alright.
“Our first bird was seen today in the shape of an Antarctic Petrel which flew round the hut once or twice and then disappeared.”
