January 11, 1912: Camp life en route to the Pole

–from Dr. Edward Wilson’s sledging diary–

“Nothing but light airs today, some of them due south.  We make a double cairn each night camp and a single cairn each lunch camp.  For the 5 of us the evening meal takes 2-1/2 beakers of pemmican, 3 spoonfuls of onion powder and 5 pounded biscuits.  This makes the hoosh.  After that we have cocoa.  For breakfast we have 2-1/2 beakers of pemmican and 3 biscuits and tea.  For lunch butter and 3 biscuits and tea.  The only extras we carry are curry powder, salt, and pepper.”
