–from his diary as published in “Under Scott’s Command”–
“26.1.12 This have been a wonderful day for surface. This morning we started with a fair wind and a soft snow and a very hight temperature–plus 34–much too high for sledging. We were on skis, or it might have been on stilts for the amount of snow clogging on them. But we were assisted by our sail and did 13 miles–8 of them in the afternoon.”
