March 3, 1912: Crean and Gran at Cape Evans

–from Tryggve Gran’s diary, published as “The Norwegian with Scott”–

3 March.  We had the animals [Indian mules] out one hour today.  It is a real joy to handle them; they are quick and willing form the time they emerge from the stable until they return to their straw.  I have been acting vet today, for one of the animals was blown up like a balloon.  We had no enema and used a football pump instead.  It functioned perfectly, but only time will show whether my doctoring has been successful.  Crean and I had a long chat tonight, and among other things he told me that, when he was sent from ‘Corner Camp’ for help, Teddy Evans had said he hoped the rescue team would consist of Nelson, Forde, and me.”
