March 20, 1912: The gales at Cape Evans

–from Tryggve Gran’s account “The Norwegian with Scott”–

“20 March.  I thought the hut would fly apart in the night, so strong was the wind.  It can’t be easy to travel on the Barrtier in such God-forsaken weather.  Let’s hope our people have reached Hut Point.  Temperature, -18 C. tonight.”
