April 10, 1912 at Cape Evans: “Alas, our fears are justified. . . .”

–from Tryggve Gran’s diary, published as “The Norwegian with Scott”–

“10 April.  Alas, our fears of last week are justified.  The polar party still have not returned to Hut Point; their fate must be sealed.  This tragic news was brought to us this evening by Atkinson, Keohane, and Demitri.  Cherry-Garrard and Demitri had waited over a week at ‘One Ton Camp’.  Bad weather and blizzards had prevented all their efforts to push farther south, and finally they were forced to give up the attempt and turn for home.  They only just managed to reach their goal of Hut Point.  The dogs were utterly exhausted and Cherry-Garrard and Demitri ill–the former nearly at death’s door.”
