May 6, 1912: Exercise with the mules at Cape Evans

–from Tryggve Gran’s diary published as “The Norwegian with Scott”–

“We took the mules out after lunch, and they clearly enjoyed the exercise after being cooped up so long.  At 6 p.m. I went up to Vane Hill.  Full moon and twinkling stars.  To the north the sea shimmered in the blue distance, to the south the white snow glittered, and beneath me lay the dark shape of the hut.  I could see the light shining out on the snow-drifts and a thin column of smoke rising easily from the chimney.  The dogs were roaming about apparently enjoying the fine weather.  Let’s hope it stays with us a bit.”
