September 10, 1912: Sledge dogs at Cape Evans

–from Frank Debenham’s account “The Quiet Land”

“Each dog has a depth of character and it is very funny dealing with them at times.  The two Garachis (Gingers) are good pullers though light, and full of spirits, the smaller being especially perky.  His expression when the sledge meets obstructions is most ludicrous.  Lion and Snowdrop are big dogs but in very poor condition.  Still they are keen.  Sohoy is a little cracked, I fear, and Massa is very fat but is a very strong puller.  He may be good to go south, but his legs are rather short to keep up with the other dogs.”
