December 13, 1914: Endurance at the edge of the pack ice-edge

–from James Wordie’s account “Polar Crusader”–

“There has sometimes been difficulty at the wheel in hearing orders on the bridge, more especially when the dogs are barking. A small telephone was propose, but found impracticable. Chippy however got over the difficulty by putting a semaphore-like erection on the bridge; and now all shouting, to and from the wheel has stopped.

“We are all very pleased with the progress that has been made and moreover there are now one or two other signs that open water may not be far off.”
