New Years Day 1915: Sixteen bells on the “Endurance”

–from Frank Hurley’s account “Shackleton’s Argonauts”–

“I saw New Year’s Day 1915 in at the wheel. Under cold, snowy conditions. A group of enthusiasts assembled on the bridge to ‘ring out the old, ring in the new’ on the ship’s bell, and all joined hands and lustily sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’, accompanied by a chorus of piteous wails from our sixty dogs.”

“The New Year augured well. We had established a record run, since entering the pack, of 120 miles for the twenty four hours. The prospect was improving. A few more such spans and our destination would be in sight.”
