January 2, 1915: the carpenter’s day on “Endurance”

–from ship’s carpenter Harry McNeish’s diary–

“Sat Jan 2nd Lat 69-49 S Lon 15-85 W run 124 miles tempreture 26 turned out 7-0 had breakfast oiled all round then cleaned tools we had a good deal open water up till noon today but we have got into a lot of very heavy ice so we are hanging on waiting for an opening but it started to blow now had Sweethearts & Wifes at 8PM & Turned in
