January 6, 1914: “Progress has not been good. . . .”

–from Sir James Wordie’s diary published as “Polar Crusader”–

“6 January. Progress has not been good. The noon position yesterday was 70º 28′ S, 20º 8′ W showing a run of 62 miles over a period of 48 hours. Yesterday afternoon the leads got steadily worse and finally at 10.30 pm the ship was tied to a floe, it being fully expected that we might stay there for two or three days even.”
