Shackleton’s “Endurance” January 15, 1915: Science on the ship

–from Sir James Wordie’s diary–

“14 January. The sun shone brilliantly all day—the fourth day’s sunshine since we left Grytviken forty days back.

“I am numbering off the contents of the Emperor Penguin’s stomachs as if they were land deposits. The stomach of a young Emperor caught on Tuesday night has given a good deal of amusement: there is about 1/2 lb of pebbles, the biggest having a maximum of one inch.

“We all enjoyed an Antarctic day and are in great spirits.”
