Shackelton’s “Endurance” January 17, 1915: “Endless glaciers on the land. . . .”

–from Sir James Wordie’s diary–

“We remained all night in the lee of a berg where the sounding was made in 136 fathoms. We have remained in the same position all day, allowing the wind to take us round in circles and then steaming slowly back to the lee of the berg. Beyond shelter a strong E wind is blowing, rocking the ship up and down like a cork. The endless glaciers on the land are continually in sight.”
