Shackleton’s ‘Endurance’ January 27, 1915: “We are beginning to feel the pinch. . .”

–from Sir James Wordie’s diary–

27 January. We are beginning already to feel the pinch of being so long held up here: we have run out of seal meat both for ourselves and the dogs. The latter are going on short rations and this, with the cold, may explain the whimpering that has been going on all day.

“The wind went round to the SW about mid-day and the square sails were set accordingly: we have not broken out however and there seems little if any chance in the pack ahead of us.”
