“23 February. The temperature remains very low for this time of year. -12deg recorded. There seems to be a sudden boom in seals as we got three yesterday and four more today. The training of the dogs has commenced—soon their services will relieve us of a great deal of not unpleasant work in bring in distant seals. Wild, Marston, Crean, Macklin, McIlroy and Hurley are the dog me: none of them has any preliminary experience to speak of, but this does not seem at all essential.
