Shackleton’s ‘Endurance’ Expedition, April 1915: “Our appetites were tremendous.”

–from meteorologist Leonard Hussey’s account “South with Endurance”–

“Breakfast was at 9:00 a.m. and consisted of porridge, cocoa or tea, bread, butter and jam. The bread, of course, was made onboard.

“At one o’clock, there was lunch: soup, bread and jam, and cocoa. Tea at four was a light meal; and at six p.m. we had the main meal of the day, our dinner. This consisted of three course. Our appetites were tremendous.”
