Shackleton’s ‘Endurance’ Expedition, January 1, 1916: New Year’s Day

–from the diary of Thomas Orde Lees–

“1 January 1916. New Year’s Day again brings homelike thoughts to mind and ardent longings to be once more amongst one’s ‘ane folk’. It is hardly to be expected that there will not be much tribulation on both sides before we all meet again, and for us perhaps not a few hardships. What is that, though; is it not all a part of the game? Do we not come down here with our lives in our hands willing to sacrifice them in the cause we have espoused if need be? We all wished each other a cheery and hearty New Year as if adversity were unknown to us.”
